Hemp seeds: a real all-rounder

Cannabis is the scientific name for hemp. While some smoke it, others eat it. There is much discussion of hemp nowadays. But is the new superfood really healthy?

Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is one of the best known and highest concentration substances in cannabis and is a real all-rounder. The annual herbaceous plant with the hand-shaped leaves originated in Central Asia, where textiles have been produced from its stems for millennia.

It’s not the flowers, it’s the seeds you eat

What is most interesting from a culinary perspective is not the flowers, which contain THC, it is the harmless seeds. Useful hemp seeds are specially grown for the food market, taste wonderfully nutty and are not intoxicating whatsoever. The seeds are what are known as oleaginous fruits, a category to which pumpkin seeds also belong. Hemp seeds are real bursts of vitamins and nutrients, rich in iron, zinc, calcium and magnesium but also vitamins A, B, C, D and E. They also contain a concentrated hit of protein that would otherwise only be able to be found in meat or dairy products. They’re also entirely free from cholesterol and trans-fatty acids. All of this makes them an absolute dream, and not just for vegans. Even the oil pressed from the seeds is very healthy, with 80 percent more unsaturated fatty acids.

Hemp seeds help you when you play sport

After a high-intensity training session, your muscles are often highly acidic. The vitamin E and other minerals found in hemp seeds work to counteract this. Omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids support the regeneration of the muscles, are anti-inflammatory and boost digestion. This makes them a perfect weight loss aid.

Hemp seeds protect our cells

Free radicals attack the cells in our bodies and can damage them. This accelerates the ageing process and leads to the most varied of diseases. Antioxidants protect us from this and have a preventative effect. Hemp seeds contain a whole load of them, strengthening our immune systems and protecting our cells.

Simply benefit from hemp seeds

The following tips show how you can benefit from the age-old cultivated plants in your food:

Secret tip: hemp seed oil can prevent wrinkles

The rare gamma linolenic acid (GLA) and its antioxidants are a fountain of youth for the skin, and hemp seed oil contains plenty. GLA forms specific hormones that are important for metabolism. As you get older, the amount of it found in the human body decreases, and this can clearly be seen in the skin. Eating the wrong foods, alcohol and stress accelerate the process. Hemp oil is the new star in the anti-ageing sky with the highest percentage of gamma linolenic acid, from which even problematic skin benefits. If you drink plenty of water as well as using hemp oil cosmetics, you will have beautiful, firm skin. The skin cream binds moisture into the cells and smooths small wrinkles.
