Mental exercise is the key to inner strength

Successful people apparently master difficult situations like nothing, quickly overcome crises and, even under pressure, achieve their best performance level. What are these people doing things differently? The ability to be good or to “function” when it matters, is a long-cherished dream for many of us. But what often acts like a small miracle on us, can be learnt by every one of us. The composure in dealing with yourself, with our fellowmen and the daily challenges that life makes us face, can be achieved through mental exercise which is the key to inner strength.

What does mental exercise mean?

The word “mental” is derived from the Latin expression “mens” and represents our spirit, reasoning, and intellect. Mental exercise is the contemplative preparation to mentally get into a situation, without really experiencing it. The point is to play through situations using the power of imagination and to have a solution in mind ready for any problem that may arise. The Heidelberg sports psychologist Hans Eberspächer says: “just the idea of a movement or action activates the same areas of the brain as the movement or action itself. This can be proved through the MRI of a brain scan. That is why one can do something incredible in the mental area.”

Energy follows the thoughts

Imagine your subconscious self is like a hard disk of a computer. Your thoughts, words and images are stored there like a program. This hard disk accepts every information it receives. Only your mind decides what it believes and what it does not, depending on what your life experiences are. If your mind considers something to be true that is wrong, your subconscious self will accept it as true and respond with the appropriate actions. But we can mentally “reprogram” ourselves, motivate ourselves to achieve something that we would never have thought possible. Our head needs only the right program for this. Through mental exercise, you will automatically learn in stress and day-to-day situations to recall that what supports you and what you need so as to respond confidently and coolly.

Transforming a loser into a winner

Top ranking athletes know the problem: they are absolutely perfect during training but fail miserably in the actual competition. Therefore, they also practise their mental strength during injury breaks. Those who develop a mental map, a kind of inner navigation system, can also fall back on it under enormous pressure. Those who are able to recall their performance at the decisive moment, they focus on the essentials and differ from many others as they achieve success and maintain a great sense of well-being.

Use your abilities confidently

Goal-oriented people feel better because they have a genuine orientation in life and believe that they are achieving their goals. The know their abilities, believe in them and also use them confidently. That is why controlling our emotions so important and the belief that one can change things. Follow clear and consistently new goals in life, unmindful of what others think about you.

Identifying opportunities instead of risks

Most of us have the ability to learn lifelong and to change the way we think. Perceiving the positive things in life more consciously, identifying opportunities instead of risks, all that can be achieved by regular mental exercise. Of course, it does not happen overnight, but those who stay on top of things will soon experience a development within. This video shows quite vividly how exactly mental exercise works and what happens in the process within the head. Take some time and watch it in a quiet minute.

Mental strength is not only a deciding factor of career, but also the key to a healthy balance between the mind, body and soul. Take care of your inner strength, and you can surely sail through life’s storms.
