Men age faster. Blame it on their behaviour

For a long time, the myth was about the strong man who, after crossing puberty, functions like a machine unchanged until old age – at work as well as in bed. It is just the opposite for a woman, over whom the sword of Damocles, more commonly known as menopause, hovers from her 45th year. But men are far from this: even the biological clock in a man begins run slower from his mid-life. Medical findings have shown that the man is at the zenith of his strength between his 20th and 30th year. But from then on, the hormones mercilessly strike him, too, and inevitably drive his ageing process forward. The man, too, comes into menopause. This process may already begin at the age of 30 years, but most of the first ailments are noticed from the 50th year. The libido recedes, the bodily bulges become more evident, the muscle strength declines and the hair turn grey or thin. Characteristics like drive, courage, motivation and creativity, but also aggression – the dark side of testosterone and masculinity per se – are lost.

Optimistic people live longer

On average, the man dies seven years earlier than the woman, and ten years before he is more often sick, hardly enjoys his life and then dies “badly repaired”. That is because men do not pursue any precautionary measures, but merely a repair strategy. The fact that we have innumerable things in our own hands was shown by a study conducted in the USA. It was intended to monitor the health condition of 700 test persons for over a period of 60 years. The findings, published in the “American Journal of Psychology”, promise a long life to those who consume alcohol moderately, do not smoke, exercise and keep an eye on their body weight. Those who wish to become really old, should also have a truly positive attitude to life and, if possible, have a lasting commitment, because optimistic people live longer in a stable partnership. It has been proven scientifically that active anti-ageing is not a vague idea, but a real option.

What is decisive is the man’s biography

How old am I going to be and how do I grow old? That is decided by the genes only to a small part. The crucial aspect is the man’s biography. Reinforced by established rules and constraints, biological programming is not only responsible for many fate-dependant factors in a man, but also for typical male phenomena like power and violence. After all, a man grows with inner notions like “a bear does not cry” and “a brave squaw knows no pain” and, at the same time, he certainly does not want to be considered a mollycoddle or a lady’s man. Such men regard weakness as feeble, soft as wimpish, understanding means being a woman – to behave like women is to be effeminate or gay. That’s the reason why they rarely go to the doctor. As long as everything seems to be running reasonably well, signals given out by the body are ignored. They overplay or transfigure their stress and, when they exercise, they often do it excessively.

Prevention lowers the risk of falling ill

Critical health issues of the man, such as altered fad distribution, muscle weakness, flagging bladder function and instances of memory loss, sometimes accompanied by depression, can be detected and treated today at an early stage. But men still tend to resist it, thinking their problems are circulated and discussed in public. Precautionary measures reduce the risk of falling ill, resulting in a better quality of life, in men and in women.

Men are masters of dodging

It has long been an open secret that many men only reluctantly take precautions. The fear that their condition, driven by high-performance, might be flawed, seems to outweigh everything else. Men have a huge problem with their physical and mental health and are masters of dodging. Even among workaholics, the male gender dominates. If they were nevertheless more careful about their body and their soul, they would not only be healthier, but they would also live more happily and live longer.

Every man should learn to chalk out a programme of realization and reason with regard to his own happiness and his health – a programme that no longer implicitly yields to basic male biological conditioning. Because everyone has the opportunity to influence his genes and remain “young” even in old age by following a balanced lifestyle. It is not biology that makes men die earlier, but their behaviour.
